Since 1st May 2015, Munich has had a central place of learning and remembrance, which documents the history of National Socialism in Munich. It documents the crimes of the Nazi dictatorship, the particular part the city played in the terror system of that time and the difficulties in dealing with this past since 1945 and deals with its causes, manifestations and consequences up to today. Where did National Socialism and its ideology come from? How did Hitler come to power and why did democracy fail? Why did most of Munich’s citizens almost blindly follow the Nazi ideology? Did the people then know what was going on in the Dachau concentration camp located right on the city’s door-step? And why is dealing with the Nazi era so necessary today? The interactive exhibition addresses these and other questions. The virtual tour will be in German.
