Sexism, i.e. discrimination based on sex, is widely present in our everyday lives. Who is going to be invited as an expert, who thinks they are capable for this part, whose behaviour is perceived as being assertive and whose as being “bitchy”, who reduces working hours in order to do unpaid care and who is not approached in work when there are problems reconciling family and work – all of these examples are not only a question of individual resources and personality, but also one of gender relations. Calling certain structures, behaviour or situations sexist, however, seldom leads to having a constructive conversation – quite the opposite. Exactly because of the fact that sexism is so much a part of our lives, it is often taken and accepted as being normal. And because discrimination is something bad, no one wants to be the one. That is where the workshop will start off. It aims at making the participants more sensitive to the issue of everyday sexism. Having background knowledge is therefore definitely not necessary. The workshop will also teach you strategies and techniques in dealing with everyday sexism, focusing on following questions: When do we have to, when should we, when do we want to point out unequal treatment in our environment? Where is it necessary to question our own prejudices and learn? How is it possible to talk about the polarizing issue of sexism in a constructive way? And when do we need to take a break from these discussion so as not to lose our energy? Anna Schiff is a gender researcher and is currently doing her PhD at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum with a paper on the history of girl sexuality. When she is not busy doing research herself, she talks about research and social movements. She is the author of the argumentational guide “Ist doch ein Kompliment... Behauptungen und Fakten zu Sexismus” [Sure, it’s a compliment... statements and facts on sexism]. In addition, she has written an introductory book on sexism. It gives an overview of different scientific and feminist positions on the topic of sexism. THE EVENT IS GOING TO TAKE PLACE ONLINE.The workshop will be held in German.
